Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They help us recognize your browser, remember your preferences, and understand how you interact with our platform.

Only essential cookies are set automatically. Every other category described below is set only after you have given consent, and only for as long as that consent stands. When you consent to Analytics, we operate Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to understand how the platform is used, and careless™ records its own measurements of how the site is used — which pages are visited, and how far a quote gets — keeping them on our own servers rather than sending them to anyone else. When you consent to Marketing, we operate the Meta Pixel to measure how our Facebook and Instagram advertising performs. Nothing in either category runs unless you turn that category on. Turn a category off and nothing in it loads again: the Meta Pixel stops sending immediately, careless™'s own measurement stops at once and the two identifiers it stored are deleted from your device, and a Microsoft Clarity session replay already in progress ends at once, because the page reloads, and the two cookies it set are deleted from your device. In any other tab you have open, the replay ends when you next move to another page, so nothing you were in the middle of there is lost.

We use, or ask your consent to use, cookies and similar storage to:

Keep you signed in and remember your settings — which we do in your browser's local storage rather than in a cookie, as the inventory below sets out
Understand how the platform is navigated, so we can improve it
Support marketing and campaign measurement

Essential — Required for core platform functionality and security. Always on, and exempt from consent because the service cannot be delivered without them.

Analytics — Help us understand how the platform is used: careless™'s own measurement, which we record on our own servers and share with no one, alongside Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity (which records anonymised session replays and heatmaps of how pages are used). Off unless you turn them on.

Marketing — Used to deliver relevant ads and track campaign performance, through the Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram). Off unless you turn them on.

Preferences — Remember your settings and personalize your experience. Off unless you turn them on.

careless™ sets no cookies of its own. Not for your session, not for your settings, and none from our servers. What is stored on your device is either a cookie set by one of the services we use, or something careless™ keeps in your browser's own local storage — not a cookie, but on your device just the same, so it is listed here too.

Listed by provider rather than by cookie name, because providers rename and add cookies without notice and a list of names goes stale quietly. Lifetimes are the longest each provider publishes; where a provider publishes none, we say so rather than estimate.

Stripe — payments. Set on the checkout page without asking, because they are essential: they let Stripe's fraud checks tell one payment session from another, and we cannot take a payment safely without them. Stripe does not publish how long they last. Stripe's cookie policy
Google Analytics — the Analytics category, so nothing is set unless you turn Analytics on. They give your browser a pseudonymous ID, so repeat visits are counted as one person rather than several. Up to 2 years. Google's cookie reference
Microsoft Clarity — the Analytics category, so nothing is set unless you turn Analytics on. They join your page views into a single session recording and heatmap. Microsoft publishes the list of cookies Clarity sets, but not how long they last. Clarity's cookie list
Meta Pixel — the Marketing category, so nothing is set unless you turn Marketing on. They record that an ad brought you here, so we can tell whether a campaign worked. Up to 90 days for the advertising click identifier; Meta publishes no lifetime for the browser identifier. Meta's own reference for those two values, and Meta's cookie policy

Some of these cookies follow you to other websites. Several are read by the same provider anywhere else it operates, not only here: Microsoft's own list, linked above, marks five of Clarity's cookies as third-party and describes one of them as used for advertising, and the Meta Pixel works the same way. That is how a provider recognises a browser it has seen elsewhere, and it is the reason Analytics and Marketing stay off until you turn them on. We do not control what a provider does with what its own cookies collect, which is why each is linked above.

Turn a category off and its tags do not load at all; turn Marketing off after having turned it on, and we delete the Meta advertising identifiers left on this device.

This is your browser's own local and session storage, written by careless™ rather than by anyone else. None of it is sent to an advertiser, and clearing your browser storage clears all of it. One item — the analytics identifiers below — travels to our own servers with each measurement we record; everything else stays on your device and is never sent anywhere.

Your signed-in session — the token that keeps you signed in, when it expires, and the token used to renew it. Essential: without them you would be signed out on every page. Signing out deletes them
A quote you have not yet claimed — a quote you started before creating an account, kept so it is still there when you sign up, until it is attached to your account. Essential: it is the quote you asked us for
Feature flags — which in-progress features are switched on in this browser. Written only when someone with admin access turns one on, so an ordinary visit never stores it
Your cookie choice — the record described under "How we record your choice" below. Essential: it is how we remember not to ask you again, and what you said yes to
Display settings — light or dark mode, which columns you have chosen to see in a table, and which navigation groups you have collapsed. These sit in the Preferences category: they are stored only if you turn Preferences on, and deleted from this device if you turn it back off
Analytics identifiers — a randomly generated identifier for this browser, and a second one for the visit you are on. They let us count a returning visitor once rather than twice, and tell one visit apart from another, so we can see which parts of the site people use and where a quote is abandoned. The identifiers themselves are random values and hold nothing about you — not your name, not your email, not your account number. If you are signed in when we record a measurement, that measurement is linked to your account, as the Privacy Policy describes. These sit in the Analytics category: they are stored only if you turn Analytics on, and both are deleted from this device the moment you turn it back off. Turning Analytics on again later starts a fresh identifier that is deliberately not joined to the old one. The visit identifier goes when you close the tab; the browser one stays until you clear your storage or withdraw consent

You can control and manage cookies at any time through:

The "Manage cookies" link — in the footer of our website pages, and at the bottom of your account dashboard. It reopens your cookie preferences wherever you are, so you can change or withdraw your consent at any time, as easily as you gave it
Your browser settings — most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies
Opt-out tools — where we use a third-party analytics or advertising service, that provider's own opt-out (for example the Google Analytics opt-out) works alongside the choice you make here

Please note that disabling certain cookies may affect platform functionality.

Your choice is stored on your own device, in your browser's local storage, under the name cookieConsent. We record which categories you allowed, the version of this policy you were shown, and the date you chose — we do not store it against your account or on our servers.

Because it lives on your device, clearing your browser storage clears your choice, and your choice does not follow you to another browser or device.

We ask again in two situations: when about twelve months have passed since you last chose, and whenever this policy changes in a way that alters what you were consenting to. Until you answer again, no non-essential cookie is set — an expired choice is treated as no consent rather than as continued consent.

How long each provider's cookies last, and where a provider publishes no lifetime at all, is set out per provider under "Cookies and similar storage" above. In general, a session cookie is deleted when you close your browser and a persistent one stays until it expires or you delete it; what careless™ itself keeps in local storage has no expiry and stays until you clear your browser storage, sign out, or withdraw the consent it was stored under.

We may update this Cookie Policy periodically. Continued use of our platform following any changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
